The most useful early goal is not a perfect build. It is learning how Forgotten Stories signals attacks, how resources connect to later runs, and when a tile is too risky. The Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide below separates published mechanics from tactical interpretation.
Current platform note: mobile and console support are planned, but the official FAQ says they will not arrive soon. These Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide controls describe the published keyboard setup.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 1
Understand the risk
Forgotten Stories is described by the official FAQ as a permadeath turn-based RPG. You select tiles to move across the map, enter battles, gather resources, and carry selected long-term progress through Books. Frequent failure is expected while the game remains a heavy work in progress.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 2
Choose the first quest
The official starting guide recommends Aggrovant Hunt or Bandit Camp. Either route introduces combat and can produce early Money and Ink. Money buys town items. Ink is used to write Books in the lobby, making it valuable beyond one encounter.
Money
Buy items in Town during the current run.
Ink
Write Books that affect later runs.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 3
Learn the defensive keys
Use A to dodge left, S to dodge down, D to dodge right, Space to jump, and F to block or parry. Training Wheels are on by default and show the expected response. The lobby Offset setting changes reaction timing, so adjust it when inputs feel consistently early or late.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 4
Build early protection
The public beginner advice recommends Leather Armor first, followed by Iron or Vorant Armor. This is an early survival path, not a universal best-in-slot claim. Equipment availability depends on the run, and the source does not promise a fixed drop order.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 5
Plan recovery before moving
Map movement restores health. Food, Potions, Mend, other healing spells, and winning a battle can also restore HP. Bread costs 3 Wheat and restores 6 HP. Food applies Well Fed and may grant another buff, so recovery can affect more than the health number.
Published food value
3 Wheat → 6 HPBread also gives Well Fed and may grant another buff.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 6
Write Books for later runs
In the lobby, a signed Book usually appears immediately in a future run or lowers a requirement by 3. Special cases exist. For example, En Garde falls from 10 Medium Weapon Affinity to 7, while other Books can remove one requirement and retain another.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 7
Know what death changes
At zero HP, a character may be downed with Deep Wounds or die. Sterilized Bandage and Cleansing Waters treat Deep Wounds; Purging Vial and Cleansing Waters treat Infection; Antidote treats Venomed. Leaving still awards shards whether the character survives or dies.
Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide · Step 8
Plan the shared stat cap
The Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide should prevent irreversible allocation mistakes. Weapon and Element Affinity share a 35-point cap. Physique and Runesight each cap at 20 and share a separate total cap of 30. Stat Lock prevents accidental gains because the current run does not offer a general respec. Keep this Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide rule visible before assigning the final points.
Official FAQ rule
Physique and Runesight cap
10 points remain. This allocation adds 10 max health, 2 max mana, and 1 max rune slot from the published thresholds.

Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide FAQ
What should a new player do first?
The Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide starts with Aggrovant Hunt or Bandit Camp, defensive-key practice, Money, Ink, and Leather Armor.
Does leaving a run lose every reward?
No. The Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide follows the official FAQ: leaving still grants shards whether the character is alive or dead.
Can every attack be dodged or parried?
No. The Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide notes that pure debuff skills may not allow dodge or parry. Blocking a multi-stack debuff may reduce the stack by one.
Are there official redeem codes?
The Forgotten Stories Beginner Guide found no official codes or redeem instructions in the ten public text channels checked on 2026-08-28. That is a dated not-found result, not a permanent claim.
